The Peach Blossom Series From Experimental Cross to Breeding Breakthrough
Carrie Kruger Utopia Clivias
In 2019, Luke made an experimental cross that would ultimately produce one of the most exciting developments in our interspecific breeding programme. The cross combined Bertie's Yellow Caulescence, a pure yellow Clivia caulescence, with the exceptional Group 1 Clivia miniata, Vico Pink Perfection.
At the time, the outcome was far from certain. The breeding potential of a yellow Clivia caulescence had not been extensively explored, and several questions surrounded the cross. Would the yellow caulescence split for pigmentation and produce orange-flowered offspring? Would the seedlings remain unpigmented? Would the yellow influence dominate, or would the peach-pink colouring of Vico Pink Perfection prevail? Most importantly, would the cross-produce quality plants worthy of further development?
Only patience would provide the answers.
The Parent Plants
The pod parent, Bertie's Yellow Caulescence, is a pure, yellow-flowered form of Clivia caulescence originating from the collection of Bertie Guillaume. The plant is known for its good flower count and attractive blooms, often displaying subtle green tipping on the petal tips.
The pollen parent, Vico Pink Perfection, is a Group 1 Clivia miniata renowned for its large peach-pink flowers, excellent flower count, and outstanding presentation. It has long been admired for its refined colouring and exceptional quality.
The First Flower
Five years after the cross was made, the first seedling flowered in 2024.The result was a delightful surprise. Instead of yellow or orange, the flower opened in a delicate soft peach shade. The bloom possessed a graceful pendulous form with beautifully flared petals, creating an elegant appearance unlike anything we had previously produced.
This first flowering seedling immediately suggested that the cross had achieved something special.
The Peach Blossom Series Emerges
As more seedlings reached flowering size, the pattern became unmistakable.
Every flowering seedling proved to be unpigmented and produced flowers in soft peach shades. Rather than displaying a wide range of colours, the offspring consistently expressed delicate peach tones with remarkable uniformity.
This was particularly significant given the use of a pure yellow Clivia caulescence parent. The expected yellow flowers never materialised. Instead, the peach colouring inherited from Vico Pink Perfection proved consistently dominant across every flowering seedling.
The results also revealed an important breeding insight. The colour influence of Vico Pink Perfection appears to be exceptionally strong, capable of transmitting its peach tones even when crossed with a pure yellow species parent. This observation may prove valuable for future breeding work involving peach-flowered Clivias and provides an exciting foundation for future generations of breeding.
Recognising the uniqueness of these plants, we named this new breeding line the Peach Blossom Series. To our knowledge, these represent the first true Group 1 peach-flowered interspecific.
The first flowering siblings have been named:
- Amber Blush
- Honey Glow
- Peaches 'n Cream
- Peach Serenade
Additional flowering seedlings will continue to be named as the series develops.
Plant Characteristics
The Peach Blossom Series combines attractive flowers with excellent garden performance.
The plants produce foliage of average length, offset freely, and flower early in the season, reflecting the flowering habits of the caulescence pod parent. The flowers are pendulous but beautifully flared, giving them both elegance and excellent presentation. Flower counts have been consistently good across the flowering plants, while the soft pastel peach colouring gives the series a distinctive identity among modern interspecific Clivias.
One of the most impressive characteristics of the series has been its speed to maturity. Interspecific hybrids are often associated with extended juvenile periods, yet the Peach Blossom Series produced its first flowers within five years of the original cross. This comparatively rapid flowering demonstrates exceptional vigour and makes the series particularly valuable from both a breeding and horticultural perspective.
