The Narcotics Series: A Bold and Influential Clivia Line
The Narcotics Series represents one of the most extraordinary and exciting Clivia breeding lines in our collection. The original series was bred by Sean Chubb, using Soft Touch and Hottie’s Hirao—both of which proudly form part of our collection at Utopia Clivias.
This foundational pairing created a line with exceptional genetic depth and long-term breeding potential, making it a cornerstone of our current and future breeding programme.
Founding Plants and Early Success
Some of the standout first-generation (F1) plants bred by Sean include:
Zol
Daggacookie
Joint
Umsangu
Greensleeves
Hash
Gunja
These plants quickly gained recognition for their unusual colouring, strong plant habit, and breeding value. Since then, a wide range of outstanding second-generation (F2) plants have been produced by Sean and by other breeders, including ourselves, further expanding the scope and refinement of the line.
A Breeder’s Favourite
The Narcotics Series has become one of our absolute favourites within our breeding programme. The genetic versatility of this line is exceptional, offering breeders a rich platform for exploration across colour, form, plant architecture, and now interspecific expression.
Interspecific Breeding and Modern Colour Development
In addition to line breeding within Clivia miniata, we actively use selected plants from the Narcotics Series in our interspecific breeding programme. Their complex pigmentation, green influence, and strong genetic character make them ideal candidates for introducing new, modern colour expressions into interspecific hybrids.
These crosses are aimed at developing:
Deeper and more complex bronze and green tones
Novel colour layering and translucence
Modern hues not traditionally seen in standard interspecific lines
The Narcotics genetics are proving to be a powerful tool in pushing colour boundaries beyond conventional expectations.
Naming Inspiration
All plants in the Narcotics Series are named in tribute to David Bowie, one of my all-time favourite artists, who sadly passed away in 2016. This naming theme reflects both the individuality of each plant and the creative spirit behind the series.
Colour Spectrum and Genetic Behaviour
The colour palette of the Narcotics Series is particularly striking, encompassing:
Sandy bronzes
Pink-toned bronzes
Deep brown bronzes
These tones are often enhanced by vibrant green throats, as well as green pigmentation on the tepals and the backs of the flowers.
Due to the inclusion of Hottie’s Hirao in the original breeding, many plants in this series are split for a percentage of green-flowered offspring in subsequent generations. This genetic feature further enhances their value, especially when used in advanced green and interspecific breeding programmes.
Conclusion
The Narcotics Series stands as a powerful example of what can be achieved through thoughtful breeding and inspired vision. Through both line breeding and interspecific work, this series continues to shape modern Clivia breeding, delivering exceptional colour depth, green influence, and exciting new directions for the future.
