Breeding with David
At first glance, David might seem unassuming, but in the world of Clivia breeding, it is nothing short of a powerhouse. Over time, this plant has proven to be one of the most valuable assets in our collection, consistently producing offspring of exceptional quality, strong plant architecture, and excellent genetic stability.
Origins and Naming
David was selected and named after Ricky and Noelia Jardim’s son, reflecting the personal connection and care involved in its acquisition. The plant itself was originally purchased from Bertie Guillaume, a renowned South African Clivia breeder. There is some speculation that David may be either a sibling or a seedling of Klein Erda, another exceptional cultivar bred by Bertie. Whatever its exact lineage, David combines both remarkable genetics and a rich personal history, making it a plant of unique significance.
Breeding Value
David’s true power lies in its performance as a breeding plant. Over several years, it has demonstrated the ability to pass on:
Recurved flower form
Unusual colour combiantions
Compact, balanced plant habit
Its versatility makes it ideal for use in multiple breeding programmes, including multi-colour lines, interspecific hybrids, and experimental colour exploration. It is especially valuable when combined with other top-tier plants from our collection, producing offspring that consistently stand out in both nurseries and shows.
Notable Offspring and Influence
David has already contributed to several remarkable breeding lines. Some of its offspring exhibit:
Exceptional flower size and substance
Strong, unique coloration
High flower counts on well-formed umbels
These seedlings have gone on to become important components in our breeding work, particularly in modern colours and interspecific programmes, where David’s genetics introduce both stability and creative potential.
Legacy and Ongoing Work
Beyond its breeding impact, David holds a special place in our nursery. Its combination of heritage and genetic strength, ensures that it will continue to play a pivotal role in the development of new and exciting Clivia lines for years to come.
